We consider online safety a fundamental building block of digital literacy. We don’t teach our children to ride a bike by sending them straight to the roads, nor should we allow children freedom and open access the first time they are on a computer.
We have worked hard to promote online-safety in our school and schools across the UK at conferences and through film. As a result of our efforts we were asked by Childnet to help produce the Know It All resources, Kara, Winston and the Smart Crew. We also worked with Professor Tanya Byron on the Byron Review, presenting at 10 Downing Street to talk about online safety with the Prime Minister.
We are committed to helping every parent keep their children safe when they are using technology. In school we monitor the devices, filter the content and use technology to transform teaching and learning in a safe way. At home the same kinds of monitoring and filtering can be achieved. However, the increase in mobile technology and apps is causing issues for a small number of children.
The guides below are designed to support you in understanding the apps and games that your children are telling us they are using. We hope you can use them to help protect your child and consider just how appropriate these apps are for your family.
