Our Intent
The core language taught at Anson Primary School is Spanish. Our MFL curriculum intends to expose our pupils to this new language from Nursery. Our aims are:
- to develop their listening, speaking and reading and writing skills.
- to ensure a positive attitude towards languages and develop the confidence to explore and experiment with unfamiliar foreign vocabulary and pronunciation.
- to show them the value of understanding the wider world and to develop an awareness of cultural differences in other countries.
The Implementation
- Our Spanish curriculum is designed to progressively develop skills and confidence in languages through weekly lessons in Key Stage 2.
- Spanish language and key vocabulary is embedded in every topic from Key Stage One to Key Stage Stage Two.
- Children acquire, use and apply the vocabulary, grammar and skills to express their ideas and thoughts in Spanish and to understand and respond to spoken Spanish.
- Children practise a balance of spoken and written Spanish, depending on their age and experience.
The Impact
Continuing with Spanish throughout KS2, in a fun way, will enable the pupils to begin to communicate confidently and effectively in a modern foreign language. They will also have the opportunity to learn about the culture of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.
- Data shows that the attainment in Spanish is in line with core subjects.
- Pupils can make good progress in this language, and acquire the skills and knowledge for further language learning in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
- There is a culture of Spain running through the school with children using Spanish is class assemblies, being celebrated in award presentations and embedded across all learning.
