Curriculum

Anson's Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum intent puts the pupils at the centre of the our school community where positive relationships, based on mutual trust and respect are at the heart of everything we do.

Our curriculum has been designed to take account of the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the Primary National Curriculum.

The children take part in a curriculum designed to give them equal access and equal opportunities regardless of their background. It exposes the children to enriching experiences across the curriculum, inside and outside school, providing access to real world opportunities.

Through shared experiences, collaboration, creativity and a nurturing environment, the children are equipped with the personal characteristics to succeed in life. The creative and performing arts are pivotal to our curriculum delivery which is underpinned by six learning behaviours. The vibrant experiences allow each of the pupils to express themselves, grow in confidence and show their individuality. This is complemented by our use of technology across the curriculum to give children a voice, an audience for their work and celebrate their achievements.

The key principles behind this intent include:

  • to be confident, independent and resilient displaying a thirst for learning
  • to be kind, showing empathy and compassion for all other children
  • to be achievers, ambitiously looking to achieve across every subject in the curriculum
  • to be cultural, embracing the diversity in the school, the community and including everyone in their life choices
  • to have aspiration, knowing what the future can offer and that their dreams can be achieved with hard work and determination

The curriculum at Anson supports a diverse population of individuals who feel that their unique qualities can make a contribution to the world they live in.

Our intent is to ensure that they have the best opportunity to fulfil these goals.

Learning Behaviours

Our Learning Behaviours underpin everything that we teach at Anson. These 6 key learning behaviours are developed in the children to support their progress and development both in the subjects they are taught and the way they are developing as humans.

Happy, Confident and Creative Learners

The curriculum at Anson Primary School gives the children the chance to explore our world in an innovative and creative way. We have developed the Anson Curriculum, creating units of work that are relevant to the children, engaging, interactive, challenging and utilise the skills they need to be 21st century learners, while adhering to national expectations and the National Curriculum. They also ensure there is progression and continuity to the teaching and learning at the school.

The curriculum is designed to reflect the diversity of the world around us and uses key texts and key figures from around the world to help the children understand their place in the world and the impact they can all have regardless of their gender, ethnicity or disability. The children can see themselves in their learning.

At the heart of each unit of work there are also opportunities for the children to build on their skills in reading, writing, maths and speaking and listening. So, the children may be learning about natural disasters, with a strong emphasis on the geographical and scientific, but they will be using reading and writing skills to research, explain, inform and describe, while using their mathematics to calculate, predict and investigate. At all times they are building their knowledge and understanding of the rich history of our planet.

We also enrich the curriculum with well-planned learning opportunities in the local area and across London.

The curriculum maps explain what will be taught during the academic year. These are reviewed annually to ensure the implementation has the impact we desire tocreat happy, confident and creative children with a lifelong love of learning.

Our curriculum is accessible to all learners. We make adjustments to our offer which ensures that all children, regardless of need or disability, are able to access the learning. This includes special provision to ensure all pupils can participate in swimming, sports day, stage performances and access formal testing with accommodations.

Where is your child heading?

Every parent is key to success in primary aged children. It is only with a partnership between the school and home that we can support children to make progress, come confident and creative and develop a lifelong love of learning. Below are the core elements of learning we hope your child can build at each step of their journey through Anson Primary School.

50 Ways to Learn at Home

Our list of 50 ways to learn at home supports parents in developing the learning behaviours of their children beyond the school day. These are simple tasks that are not about spending money but more about spending time to support your child's development. They are written by parents for parents and are all tried and tested activities.

Online Safety

Visit the online safety page to see how we teach online safety and how you can help keep children safe at home.

We are very proud of the way the children approach their learning. Their enthusiasm and desire to learn, along with their focus in sessions, means that we are able to push the boundaries in innovative ways. Work is shared through the website, social media and the radio station. The augmented reality work we have undertaken has had an impact on the whole school community as well as a global audience. Children from Year 3 to Year 6 have been involved in the i,Scientist project at the Science Museum, and we have produced some excellent dramatic works with children across the school. Every pupil in Year One to Year Six is a published author, helping us to raise the profile of writing and share it with the community. Our teachers share their work too, with over one million downloads of their educational iBooks.

We encourage every pupil to try and achieve the best they possibly can in all curriculum areas. We also encourage the children to be creative at all times.

We also used professional software packages to present their work in the best possible way. The curriculum is truly cross curricula and a shining example of the depth and quality of learning at Anson. All aspects of our curriculum are accessible to all children, irrespective of their ethnic background, gender, disability or religious background. We strive hard to meet the needs of those pupils with special educational needs, those with disabilities, those who are more able, those with special gift and talents and children who are learning English as an additional language.

We provide a rich, challenging curriculum, which stretches all our children.
